Red Bull Racing and Mercedes drivers left without prizes at the Australian Grand Prix
Max noticed the problem at turn 3: the brake disc jammed and it broke. But even earlier, the racer discovered that the brakes had stopped cooling. Sergio Perez failed to make it into the top three: he finished fifth.
Mercedes representatives also had problems. Lewis Hamilton suffered an engine failure and George Russell was involved in an accident. The driver was chasing Fernando Alonso, trying to reach 6th position. But he failed to control the car, and he crashed into the fence 2 laps before the finish. Russell himself was not injured. Due to this incident, the race ended in virtual safety car mode. This means that all cars slowed down, but the gaps remained. Interestingly, Alonso was punished for this. The judges found him dangerous for other pilots and punished him with a 20-second penalty. As a result, the Aston Martin pilot lost 2 positions.
After two years of dominance by Verstappen, the winner was Carlos Sainz (Ferrari). He noted that this race was not the most difficult for him. After all, he drove most of the first lap on a clean track, so he was in complete control of the situation.
The second place was taken by Charles Leclerc from the Ferrari team (his car had problems with tires). Third place was taken by Lando Norris (McLaren), who noted that his team was closing the gap with Ferrari and Red Bull.
Norris's teammate Oscar Piastri came 4th, by the way he noted that he was capable of a faster pace, but overall the results of the Grand Prix of Australia pleased him.
