Metallica is known as one of the most successful heavy metal bands in the world, having sold over 57 million albums in the United States and over 90 million worldwide. The band's name was coined by the drummer who invited James Hetfield to join the new group. With their fast rhythms, virtuoso playing, and aggressive sound, the band went down in history as one of the founding members of the "big four" of thrash metal, along with bands such as Megadeth, Anthrax, and Slayer. Their 1991 album Metallica, known as The Black Album, became one of the best-selling albums of all time, selling nearly 17 million copies in the United States alone. The band has won numerous awards throughout their career, including nine Grammy Awards, and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2009.
Early in their career, Metallica allowed fans to record their concerts by creating special areas for them. During the 1980s, the band gained a reputation for their uncompromising style. In 1991, they became more popular with shorter songs that attracted a wider audience while maintaining their signature style.
The band has an 83-person crew that ensures the musicians’ comfort while on tour. Each band member has their own chef and dentist; Lars Ulrich even has an assistant to work on his computer.
