In the 2000s, the band faced personal and professional trials, which were documented in the documentary Some Kind of Monster. However, they continued to create and perform, demonstrating their resilience. The albums St. Anger (2003), Death Magnetic (2008) and Hardwired…to Self-Destruct (2016) marked a return to a heavier sound, while maintaining a spirit of experimentation.
