Description
The history of TOSFED Istanbul Park began in 2005, when Turkey hosted the Formula 1 World Championship for the first time. The track, built specifically for this event, instantly won the respect of pilots and engineers due to the difficult terrain, altitude differences and the non — standard direction of movement - counterclockwise. The first Turkish Grand Prix was won by Kimi Raikkonen, and in subsequent years Felipe Massa dominated here, winning three victories on this track. From 2005 to 2011, the circuit hosted Formula 1 annually, as well as stages of MotoGP, DTM series, World Touring Car Championship, Le Mans Series and other major competitions. After 2011, due to financial disagreements, the Turkish Grand Prix was excluded from the calendar, but the track was not idle: the races of the World Rallycross Championship, the World Superbike Championship and the European Truck Championship were held here.
In 2020, Istanbul Park triumphantly returned to Formula 1 - against the backdrop of the pandemic, the track was included in the calendar as a replacement for canceled stages and gave the audience an unforgettable race. And then a full-fledged comeback was announced: the Turkish Grand Prix will be included in the Formula 1 calendar from 2027 under a five-year contract. This event once again puts Istanbul on a par with the world capitals of motorsport.
